Every new Streamwatch group is another small but significant step towards a broader community understanding of catchment health — how our everyday actions directly affect the rivers, creeks, and wetlands that are the lifeblood of our local environments. Streamwatch is not just about testing water quality — it’s about fostering a sense of ownership and responsibility for the urban catchments that collect and channel rainfall across our landscapes.
Partnerships with Cooks River Alliance and Georges Riverkeeper have strengthened Streamwatch’s capacity to support groups keen to measure and monitor water quality while also learning about best-practice urban catchment management.

National Science Week 2025 is providing a fantastic opportunity to showcase waterway protection to a broader audience. Streamwatch presentations are being held at both Centennial Parklands and Sydney Zoo, engaging a diverse crowd of families, students, and curious visitors. Using the Streamwatch Alert Kit, our staff will demonstrate how water quality parameters like pH, dissolved oxygen, and turbidity can reveal the health of a waterway. The ever-popular dipnetting for waterbugs will also be featured.

Looking ahead, Streamwatch is gearing up for the Spring Waterbug Blitz, a nationwide citizen science event that invites community members to survey waterbug populations in their local waterways. In preparation for this event, Streamwatch recently hosted a Waterbug Dipnetting Training Day with Greg from Embrace Ecology. Greg’s expertise in aquatic macroinvertebrates provided participants with invaluable knowledge on identifying waterbug species, understanding their ecological roles, and recognising how changes in waterbug communities can signal shifts in waterway health.
Streamwatch will be hosting a Waterbug Blitz – Catchment Crawl. This event will see Streamwatch groups visiting multiple monitoring sites along a catchment, observing how water quality changes from upstream bushland through suburban stretches and into urbanised zones. More details will be shared in the next Streamwatch Newsletter, so stay tuned!
As Streamwatch continues to grow, so too does its impact. Together, we are not only monitoring water quality but nurturing a community that values, protects, and respects the waterways that sustain Sydney’s unique urban ecosystems.
