Whale Watching & Coastal Clean Up

By Sophie Blair, Wildventure Landcare Local Landcare Coordinator

In June 2025, we kicked off our sustainable winter with a Whale Watching Walk & Clean Up at Cape Solander. Twenty young, keen volunteers were rewarded with the breathtaking sight of the humpback whale migration in full swing, spotting about 50 whales in just three hours!

While connecting with nature, we also protected it by collecting 10 large bags of rubbish from the coastline. This was an act of citizen science, as we logged all our findings into the Tangaroa Blue Australian Marine Debris Institute‘s database to help researchers track and reduce ocean waste. The day was a perfect blend of environmental action and community building, filled with great chats about everything from music festivals to environmental solutions!

Sew and Sip Boomerang Bags Workshop

On July 31st, we hosted a fun and creative Sew and Sip evening, our first event with the new Wildventure Boomerang Bags group! Eight of us came together to tackle textile waste head-on. Participants of all skill levels learned how to sew, repair, and create useful things out of materials that would have otherwise ended up in landfill. It was a wonderful night of building community through learning and giving waste a new life.

The bags, made of recycled materials, can then be sold to raise funds to support Greater Sydney Landcare’s conservation work.

Upcoming in August: Urban & Verge Gardening Workshop!

Join us for our final sustainable winter workshop and get your hands dirty!

Wildventure Tree Planting at Koala Fest in September

Wildventure will also be facilitating another festival tree planting, similar to our Subsonic Music Festival and ExplorerFest events we have done in the past, where we will be showing many community members how to plant trees and have a bit of fun learning about Landcare and revegetation at this great environmental event.

Calling for Volunteers

We’re looking for a few young adult volunteers to assist with this event and help facilitate the planting. If you’re a keen volunteer and would like to dedicate your time on the day to getting these trees in the ground, please put in your EOI to Sophie Blair at sophie.blair@greatersydneylandcare.org and she will be in contact with you soon!

You can also give a gift to support our work with KoalaFest. Your gift will help support on-ground works, community education, festival activities and essential services that will truly make Koala Fest the best environmental event of the year!
