As part of Kingspan’s Planet Passionate programme, 17 volunteers from Tate and Kingspan Insulated Panels joined Greater Sydney Landcare (GSL) in Mulgoa for a hands-on day of koala habitat restoration this Spring (2026). Planet Passionate is Kingspan group’s global sustainability programme, focused on helping create a more sustainable future through action on climate, circularity and protecting the natural world. The team helped improve and protect habitat for one of our most iconic native species, contributing to the programme’s focus on positive environmental action.

Working alongside GSL Staff and Mulgoa Valley Landcare, the group spent the day removing invasive lantana from the site. In total, volunteers removed an impressive 35 cubic metres of lantana across 900 square metres, helping open the understorey and create space for native vegetation to regenerate.

Lantana can form dense thickets that compete with native plants and alter the structure of bushland. Removing it is an important part of restoring the diverse vegetation communities that provide food, shelter and movement corridors for koalas and other native wildlife. The scale of some of the lantana quickly became apparent, with one volunteer looking at a particularly large plant and exclaiming, “Gosh, it’s a monster!”

The day wasn’t just about getting stuck into the weeds. Volunteers also learnt about the complex relationships that exist within healthy ecosystems and why maintaining this balance is so important for wildlife. Lisa from Mulgoa Valley Landcare led the group on a koala walk and talk, sharing her knowledge of the local landscape, koala habitat and the importance of protecting and restoring areas where koalas have lived.

GSL supervisors said the group were determined to make an impact, tackling the lantana with plenty of enthusiasm and asking lots of great questions throughout the day. For the volunteers, it was also an opportunity to spend time outdoors and contribute to a local environmental cause. As one participant reflected, “It was a good experience to get out in the bush and help out for a good cause.”
