Thirteen enthusiastic volunteers from Stockland recently joined Greater Sydney Landcare (GSL) for a rewarding corporate volunteering day at Smiths Creek Reserve, located in the Campbelltown City Council area.
The day brought together corporate volunteers, GSL staff, and Campbelltown Council Bushcare Officers to support the restoration of the critically endangered Sandstone Shale Transition Forest. This unique ecological community occurs primarily in western Sydney, where clay soils from shale blend with sandy soils derived from sandstone along the edges of the Cumberland Plain. Protecting and restoring this habitat is essential to safeguarding the biodiversity it supports, including Koala’s.
Representing GSL on the day were Danielle Hughes (Acting Corporate Manager), Peter Cartwright (Environmental Field Officer), and Roni Hong (Communications and Data Manager). Campbelltown Council Bushcare Officers also attended, providing valuable insight into the significance of the site and explaining how the volunteers’ efforts contribute to long-term bushland restoration.
Despite warm conditions, the group was fortunate to have cloud cover and shade from the surrounding canopy. Volunteers worked diligently to remove large sections of Fishbone Fern, along with a range of other invasive weeds including annuals, vines, and privet. Their efforts will help native vegetation regenerate and strengthen the resilience of this threatened ecosystem and support Koala habitat.
The day concluded with a guided walk led by Bushcare Officer Michael Ellison, who shared his knowledge of the local bushland and the Koalas and other wildlife that call it home.The group was thrilled to spot a pair of Gang-gang Cockatoo, an endangered and increasingly rare sighting. Adding to the excitement, a Whistling Kite soared overhead, giving volunteers a memorable encounter with one of the area’s impressive birds of prey.
Morning tea and lunch were provided, with fresh fruit, cake and biscuits in the morning, followed by Subway sandwiches for lunch, a well-earned break after a productive morning in the field.
We thank Stockland and their volunteers for their hard work and commitment to restoring critically endangered bushland in western Sydney. Partnerships like these play a vital role in protecting and enhancing our natural environment for future generations.
