On Sunday 27th October, Greater Sydney Landcare partnered with Western Sydney Parklands to host a spooktacular Creating Canopies planting at Bungarribee Park.

50 volunteers descended on the area, including a few families in Halloween costumes, for a Monster Planting Day.

The day had a great turnout – which was needed as there were 1,000 native trees and shrubs to plant. The newly installed plants also needed to be staked and guarded for protection from browsing kangaroos and deer.

The group planted native trees and shrubs including gum trees (eucalypts and angophoras), wattles (acacias), Rice Flower (Ozothamnus diosmifolius), Tick Bush (Kunzea ambigua), tea trees (melaleucas), Hop bushes (dodonaeas), Hakeas, She-Oaks (allocasuarinas), paperbarks (leptospermums), Australian Indigo (Indigofera australis), Sweet Bursaria (Bursaria spinosa), Coffee Bush (Breynia oblongifolia) and other suited to this area.

The sunny morning reached 29 degrees and the ground was hard, but everyone put in a great effort and had a lot of fun.

Afterwards, kids could enjoy a fun activity, unleashing their creativity by crafting their very own clay monster to take home. A few sweet treats were also enjoyed on the day.

This is the second time Creating Canopies has planted at Bungarribee Park this year – the first was in May 2024.

Greater Sydney Landcare staff Alicia Harb-Akins and Aimee Hancock from our Creating Canopies team led the day. It was a hot and busy planting but Alicia expressed gratitude for the great energy the volunteers brought to the day.

A special thank you to Christy Tam, Charter President of Lions Club of Sydney Harmony Zone 7 Chair and District Marketing Chair, for organising a big group of Lions to plant at this event. And thank you to all the amazing volunteers who came and planted with us!

Bungarribee Park is part of Western Sydney Parklands, which is managed as part of the Greater Sydney Parklands estate. Thank you to Greater Sydney Parklands for volunteering Bungarribee Park for canopy trees and shrubs.
