On Thursday 28th August 2025, Greater Sydney Landcare hosted a corporate volunteering day with nine staff from Marine & Civil Maintenance at Boronia Park, Hunters Hill. Together we rolled up our sleeves to tackle invasive weeds and protect one of Hunters Hill’s most important patches of urban bushland.

In just one day, the Marine & Civil Maintenance team contributed 45 hours of volunteer labour and removed more than 21 cubic metres of invasive weeds, including Asparagus Fern and Lantanaβ€”both Weeds of National Significanceβ€”as well as Small-leaf privet. Their hard work is helping restore valuable habitat for native animals in an area of high biodiversity significance.

Weeds of National Significance (WoNS) are 32 plant species identified by Australian governments as some of the most serious invasive weeds. They were chosen because of their ability to spread quickly, their invasiveness, and the severe environmental, economic and social impacts they cause.

Protecting a Vital Reserve

Boronia Park is Hunters Hill’s largest green space, stretching across 24 hectares. It protects three endangered ecological communities and provides habitat for threatened species, including the Powerful Owl. The park also plays a critical role in stormwater management and heat reduction, while connecting people to nature through bushland walking tracks and the Great North Walk.

However, weeds remain a major threat. Without regular control, they overwhelm native vegetation and reduce habitat quality. That’s why Greater Sydney Landcare, in partnership with Hunters Hill Council, continues to bring volunteer groups here to support long-term bush regeneration.

A Day of Teamwork and Connection

Led by Greater Sydney Landcare’s Corporate Engagement Manager, Sabina Roe, and Environmental Restoration Officer, Kylie Burrows, the Marine & Civil Maintenance team combined hard work with learning. Sabina praised the group as β€œdiligent and hardworking.”

The team also took part in water quality monitoring through the Streamwatch program with Streamwatch Officer Laura Fazio-Nagy, gaining insight into how their efforts contribute to healthier waterways that feed into the Lane Cove River.

The day was rounded out with a BBQ lunch in the sunshine, where volunteers reflected on the experience:

  • β€œIt’s a great day to be out of the office.”
  • β€œI like doing the Lantana.”
  • β€œIt’s good learning about water quality because a lot of the work we do relates to that.”

As well as leaving a positive impact on the bushland, the team also enjoyed spotting local wildlife like Brush Turkeysβ€”a reminder of the native animals that will benefit directly from their efforts.

Partnering for Impact

Greater Sydney Landcare is proud to work with Hunters Hill Council to manage and enhance Boronia Park for the benefit of wildlife and the community. We’re equally grateful to Marine & Civil Maintenance for their enthusiastic contribution to caring for Greater Sydney’s environment.

Together, we’re making a differenceβ€”supporting threatened species, creating healthier bushland and waterways, and giving corporate teams the chance to connect with nature while strengthening team bonds and delivering on important sustainability goals.
