On Monday 13th October 2025, Greater Sydney Landcare hosted a corporate volunteering day for a team of 32 from Iberdrola Australia and their families. They came to get their hands dirty for a great cause—caring for the environment in Northbridge’s Warners Park, a place of rich natural and cultural heritage. This event was run in partnership with Willoughby City Council, who manage the site.
The Iberdrola Australia team contributed an impressive 160 volunteer hours and removed 20 cubic metres of invasive weeds, including Fishbone Fern, Ivy and a Weed of National Significance, Asparagus Fern. Their collective effort made a visible impact on the landscape and supported the ongoing restoration of this precious green space.
Restoring the Health of an Urban Bushland
Warners Park is a special area that holds deep significance as the traditional Country of the Cammeraygal people, who cared for and were sustained by the land for thousands of years. Once home to diverse bushland and vibrant waterways, the area has changed dramatically due to urban development and altered water flows.
Today, invasive weeds threaten the health of native vegetation and reduce habitat for local wildlife. By clearing out dense patches of weeds, Iberdrola Australia’s volunteers made space for native plants to return, which will in time improve biodiversity and the long-term resilience of the ecosystem.
Teamwork, Conservation & Connection
The event was led by Greater Sydney Landcare staff Sabina Roe, Danielle Hughes and Laura Fazio-Nagy, who guided the day’s bushland restoration activities. Chris Williams, from Willoughby City Council’s Bushland Regeneration Team, stopped by during the day to see the team’s progress.
Danielle said, “The group were enthusiastic and hard working. They had lots of questions and really got into the work.” She added, “It went very well. A great vibe. The volunteers thought the bush regeneration was very satisfying work.”
Exploring Biodiversity Through a Nature Safari
As part of the day, the Iberdrola Australia team also joined a nature safari—an interactive biodiversity workshop led by Laura. They bushwalked through the park, exploring native plants, fungi and wildlife, and learned how to use the iNaturalist app to record and identify species. Each observation added valuable data to a global citizen science platform that helps monitor biodiversity and guide conservation efforts.
This hands-on experience offered a deeper appreciation of Sydney’s urban bushland, showing how local actions—like weed removal and citizen science—can have meaningful environmental benefits.
Inspiring Ongoing Impacts
This was the second consecutive year Iberdrola Australia has teamed up with Greater Sydney Landcare to care for Northbridge’s bushland. Last year’s volunteering day took place at nearby Tunks Park, also on Cammeraygal Country. By returning to the area, the Iberdrola Australia team are helping to build a lasting legacy of environmental restoration across Sydney’s lower north shore.
Participants commented on how much they valued the experience, saying: “It’s a great way to get out of the office” and that it was “Very satisfying work.”
“I joined bushcare after last year’s event—now it’s a big part of my life,”
one participant shared.
After a productive morning’s work, the team relaxed over a BBQ lunch and enjoyed lawn games like giant Jenga and cricket. It was a day of connection, learning, and community spirit—one that strengthened bonds within the team while supporting local environmental stewardship.

Iberdrola Australia’s efforts at Warners Park contributed to the ongoing care of this unique urban bushland, ensuring it continues to thrive for future generations. Their contribution demonstrates how corporate volunteering can deliver genuine environmental outcomes while offering a rewarding and memorable experience for participants.
