On Wednesday 14th May 2025, 8 staff from Dig Agency swapped their desks for a dose of sunshine and fresh air, volunteering their time to restore bushland in Boronia Park, Hunter’s Hill.
Hosted by Greater Sydney Landcare, the day was part of our ongoing corporate volunteering program, where organisations actively support vital environmental work in the Greater Sydney region.
Removing Weeds, Restoring Habitat
Under the friendly guidance of Greater Sydney Landcare’s Corporate Engagement Manager, Sabina Roe, and Environmental Field Officer, Kylie Burrows, the group learned the basics of bush regeneration—a process that helps degraded bushland bounce back by controlling invasive weeds and encouraging native regrowth.
Impressive Results: 16 Cubic Metres of Invasive Weeds Removed
With great enthusiasm, and Laughing Kookaburras as their soundtrack, the team tackled two sites.
At the first, they removed an impressive 10 cubic metres of Lantana and Small Leaf Privet—both significant environmental weeds. Lantana, a Weed of National Significance, forms impenetrable thickets, spreads easily, and significantly increases bushfire risk and severity by adding fuel to forest areas. Small Leaf Privet is similarly destructive, outcompeting native plants and making it difficult for wildlife to move through affected bushland.
And the group didn’t stop there. At a second site where Greater Sydney Landcare and volunteers had previously worked, Dig Agency removed another 6 cubic metres of weeds, including Camphor Laurel, Ochna, African Olive, and more Privet and Lantana. By clearing these woody weeds, they pushed the edge of the regenerating area further, supporting the long-term restoration of the reserve.
This is part of a larger effort: in 2024, Greater Sydney Landcare hosted five corporate groups for bush regeneration activities at Boronia Park. Dig Agency is the third group to join us here this year—and their contribution is helping to build real momentum and keep the site on track.
Beyond Weeding: Connecting with Nature
After a rewarding morning, the group enjoyed a well-earned BBQ lunch and a peaceful bushwalk led by Kylie, where they spotted native orchids and fungi, and took time to enjoy the bush they’d helped care for.
Sabina praised the team’s energy and commitment, saying, “The group were punctual and organised which made the day run smoothly. Their enthusiasm and willingness to jump in and help made a big difference.” One volunteer summed it up perfectly: “It feels good to do something. It’s satisfying removing the weeds—it’s a great break from the phone!”

By reducing weed pressure and supporting natural regrowth, we help native plants and animals thrive. This kind of long-term, strategic work requires patience and people-power—something our corporate volunteers continue to provide in spades.
