On Tuesday 4th November 2025, 7 volunteers from Delta Electronics Australia joined Greater Sydney Landcare for a corporate volunteering day at Boronia Park in Hunters Hill. The group contributed an incredible 35 volunteer hours removing invasive weeds and restoring the area’s valuable native bushland. This event was run in partnership with Hunter’s Hill Council.

The team was guided by Greater Sydney Landcare’s friendly and professional bush regenerators, Danielle Hughes and Peter Cartwright, who shared their expertise in native plant ecology and bushland restoration techniques.

Tackling Weeds of National Significance

The Delta Electronics Australia team targeted invasive species including privet, lantana, ochna, and fish bone fern. Lantana, a Weed of National Significance, forms dense, impenetrable thickets that smother native vegetation, add fuel to fires, and reduce soil, fauna and fungi diversity. Privet, ochna and fish bone fern similarly all outcompete native vegetation and reduce food and habitat for native animals. By removing these invasive species, volunteers helped open up space for native plants to regenerate, which will improve conditions for local wildlife and biodiversity.

In addition to bush regeneration, the Delta volunteers took part in a Streamwatch session with Greater Sydney Landcare’s Mark Secombe, where they looked for water bugs as indicators of waterway health. The results were encouraging, with the group finding sensitive aquatic speciesβ€”a positive sign of good water quality.

A Great Day Out Doing Good

The group enjoyed a morning tea of fruit, biscuits and cake, and sandwiches for lunchβ€”a welcome break and a chance to connect in the fresh air. Corporate volunteering days like this provide a meaningful, team-building experience where participants can step away from their desks, spend time in nature, and make a tangible difference for the environment.

A huge thank you to Hunter’s Hill Council for opening up their site for restoration works, and to Delta Electronics Australia for their ongoing support and commitment to a greener, healthier Greater Sydney.

Partnerships For Impact

This was Delta’s third corporate volunteering event with Greater Sydney Landcare. Their first event was in March 2025, when they helped Greater Sydney Landcare staff install native plants at Scarborough Ponds in Monterey, a project run in partnership with Bayside Council.

Their second event was in September 2025, when a group of 12 Delta volunteers joined Greater Sydney Landcare at the Mount Schoenstatt Shrine & Retreat in Mulgoa. The team that day contributed 60 volunteer hours and removed 30 cubic metres of Lantana to improve habitat for native wildlife, including Koalas. Delta also produced a short video showcasing their Mulgoa volunteering dayβ€”watch it here. We greatly appreciate your efforts Delta Electronics Australia!

Working Together For Better Outcomes

Greater Sydney Landcare has worked with corporate groups at Boronia Park over half a dozen times since 2024, contributing to a long-term management strategy for the site. Weed control requires consistent attention and a mix of management techniques targeting multiple stages of the weed lifecycle.

As Danielle explained, β€œRemoving weeds gives native plants a chance to grow, but it can also give more weeds a chance to spring upβ€”which is why we come back regularly. Over time, this reduces the weed seedbank in the soil and provides more opportunity for native plants to regenerate naturally.”

A Vital Wildlife Corridor

Boronia Park forms part of a critical wildlife corridor connecting Sydney Harbour to Lane Cove National Park. At 24 hectares, it’s the largest open space in Hunter’s Hill and one of the best remaining examples of the area’s pre-colonial landscape.

The park is home to Powerful Owls and many other native species, including several threatened species and three endangered ecological communities. It also plays an important role in stormwater management, heat reduction, and providing access to nature through the Great North Walk and other bushland trails.
