On Monday 24th March 2025, Greater Sydney Landcare’s Creating Canopies team returned to Campbelltown Golf Club for another successful planting day — part of our ongoing project to green Greater Sydney and reduce urban heat.

On the day the team — which included our dedicated staff, two volunteers, and two apprentices —planted 510 native trees and shrubs. This planting is an important step in creating more shade for visitors, protecting neighbouring households from stray golf balls, and fostering a richer, more biodiverse habitat for local wildlife.

More Trees for Communities

The team kicked off the day at 7 am, making the most of pre-dug trenches prepared by the golf club. By 3 pm, we had successfully planted, guarded, and watered every single plant.

The following day, a burst of rain gave the site an extra boost — perfect timing to help these young trees establish.

The plants chosen for this site reflect the area’s unique environmental conditions, with species selected from the Cumberland Shale Plains Woodland and Cumberland Blue Box River Flat Forest. These species are well-suited to the drier and wetter soils found across the site, ensuring they will thrive for years to come.

A Growing Legacy at Campbelltown Golf Club

This planting is part of Creating Canopies, which held successful plantings at Campbelltown Golf Club in 2021, 2022, and 2023. With this latest effort, the total number of plants installed here now stands at 3,854 — an amazing milestone toward a greener, cooler future!

Meet the Team

A huge shout-out to our incredible team who made it all happen:

  • Bryce Doyle – Natural Resources Manager
  • Danielle Packer – Creating Canopies Project Manager
  • Alicia Harb-Akins – Creating Canopies Project Officer
  • Eli Stead – Southwest Sydney Koala Project Officer
  • Kylie Burrows – Environmental Field Officer (on her very first day with Greater Sydney Landcare)

Why This Matters

This planting is part of the Creating Canopies initiative — a collaboration between Greater Sydney Landcare and Landcare NSW, proudly funded by the NSW Government. By the end of 2025, the project aims to plant 300,000 native trees across Greater Sydney to help reduce urban heat and support local biodiversity.

At previous planting sites, we’ve recorded temperature differences of up to 10°C between areas exposed to the sun and those shaded by canopy. Trees also act as nature’s air-conditioners, cooling the surrounding environment through a process called evapotranspiration, where moisture is released from their leaves to cool the air.

Thank You!

A special thank you to Campbelltown Golf Club for generously providing land and support for this important work. Your commitment to increasing canopy cover and providing habitat for native wildlife is helping shape a cooler, greener, and more sustainable future for Greater Sydney.
