A team of 9 volunteers from Accenture’s Sydney office recently stepped out of the office and into the bushland at Mulgoa, spending the day getting hands-on with koala habitat restoration. The morning started with an acknowledgement of Country and smoking ceremony by Aboriginal Coordinator Karen Cook. Who shared stories of her families history and connection to country with the team.

Working alongside Greater Sydney Landcare staff the Accenture team then rolled up their sleeves to help restore an important area of bushland in the Mulgoa Valley. Their work focused on removing Latana camara and opening areas of bushland to allow easier movement of Koala’s through the site. They removed an impressive 28 cubic metres of Lantana across 900 square metres of bushland.

Mulgoa is an important part of the Cumberland Plain landscape, providing habitat and movement corridors for koalas and a range of other native wildlife such as the Yellow Eastern Robin found onsite. However, years of weed invasion and habitat loss have put pressure on these ecosystems. Restoring these areas takes ongoing effort, and corporate volunteer teams can make a real difference by adding extra hands to the work already being led by local Landcare groups.

For the Accenture team, the day was about more than simply getting outdoors. It was an opportunity to learn more about the local environment and the importance of protecting and restoring koala habitat. One volunteer commented at the end of the day that they hadn’t expected to learn so much, describing the experience as a “nice surprise.”

There was plenty of teamwork involved, with volunteers working together to tackle weeds, clear areas for native regeneration and improve the condition of the surrounding bushland. Regional Landcare Coordinator Alicia Harb-Akins was impressed by the teams enthusiasm, teamwork and curiosity.

Corporate volunteering days like this are an important part of GSL’s work with businesses. By connecting corporate teams with local Landcare projects, we can help turn a day of volunteering into meaningful environmental outcomes while supporting the people already working to care for these places.

The scale of the challenge at Mulgoa means there is always more work to do. Every team that gets involved helps build momentum for the long-term restoration of this important landscape.
