National Science Week is Australia’s largest celebration of science, technology, engineering and maths, sparking curiosity and inspiring discovery across the country. Streamwatch was proud to join the festivities across two Sydney events, sharing the importance of healthy waterways and hands-on citizen science with the community.
Science Week at Sydney Zoo
For the second year in a row, Streamwatch joined a fantastic line-up of education facilitators at Sydney Zoo on the 13th and 14th of August 2025 to showcase our program. Across two days, more than 400 students and countless zoo visitors explored the fascinating world of waterbugs with live specimens collected on-site.
From glass shrimp and water mites to damselfly nymphs, guests got a close-up look at the tiny creatures that reveal the health of our waterways — all while set against the playful backdrop of the zoo’s ever-mischievous meerkats. Thank you to Sydney Zoo for inviting us to be part of this exciting celebration of science!”

Science in the Swamp
The following weekend at Science in the Swamp, Greater Sydney Landcare welcomed over 800 visitors to our stall. Streamwatch coordinators led hands-on activities, showcasing waterbugs and their role in monitoring waterway health. Young visitors were thrilled to get up close and use magnifying glasses to see Water Toad Bugs, Dragonfly Larvae and Glass Shrimp.
Many parents commented on how amazing it was to discover so many different animals in the water that they normally wouldn’t expect to find. Guests also learned about the importance of healthy riparian zones in supporting aquatic ecosystems, making it a fun and memorable experience for all ages.
Thank you to Greater Sydney Parklands for hosting Science in the Swamp.

Lastly thank you to all the students, teachers and parents who came to visit us at both events.
