On Thursday 5th June 2025, Greater Sydney Landcare welcomed 14 volunteers from Microsoft for a corporate volunteering day at Nurragingy Reserve in Doonside, within the Blacktown LGA. Under clear skies and in crisp 17-degree weather, the team rolled up their sleeves and made a tangible impact on local bushland.

Hands-On Help for Local Bushland

Across the day, the group contributed 70 volunteer hours to the removal of invasive weedsโ€”including both Small- and Large-leaf Privetโ€”clearing an impressive 12 cubic metres in total. In addition to weeding, volunteers collected rubbish from the site, helping to restore the areaโ€™s natural beauty and health.

Guided by GSL Staff and Local Knowledge

Greater Sydney Landcareโ€™s Corporate Engagement Manager Sabina Roe and Environmental Field Officer Kylie Burrows led the day. Sabina appreciated the groupโ€™s enthusiasm and the strong mix of new and returning participantsโ€”many of whom had previously volunteered with us.

As a bonus, the group enjoyed a guided site walk led by local birdwatcher Wayne Keys, who helped participants spot and appreciate some of the Reserveโ€™s feathered residents.

Connecting with Nature, One Day at a Time

โ€œIt feels like I am making a big difference. Itโ€™s nice to be away from the computer,โ€ one volunteer reflected. Days like these offer corporate teams a fun opportunity to step outside the office, get their hands dirty, and connect with each other and nature in a meaningful way.

After a morning of hard work, the team gathered for a BBQ lunch prepared by Greater Sydney Landcare staff with help from Microsoft’s Ramsina. It was a well-earned reward for their efforts and a chance to relax and reflect on their impact.

A Long-Term Commitment to Regeneration

This latest visit builds on the ongoing partnership between Microsoft and Greater Sydney Landcare. Microsoft volunteers have returned to Nurragingy Reserve and other sites in Western Sydney multiple times, contributing to the slow and steady process of bush regeneration. Ecological restoration takes time and consistency, so itโ€™s heartening to see returning corporate groups who are committed to helping a site thrive over the long term.

Thank You to Our Partners

We extend a big thank you to Microsoft for their continued support and to each volunteer who gave their time and energy. We also thank Blacktown City Councilโ€”the land manager of Nurragingy Reserveโ€”for their support and for allowing us to carry out this important work at the site. Together, weโ€™re helping protect and restore precious urban bushland for the benefit of local wildlife and future generations.
